Library Media Specialist

Library Media Program Description

At GMA, the mission of our library program is to foster a love of reading through exposure to a variety of literature and to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are effective users of ideas and information. Students are empowered to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. Additionally, the library serves to build and to strengthen connections between student information and research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources. Flexible access to the programs and services of the library media program is encouraged to all students and staff. The Reading Olympics, Scholastic Book Fair, and PA Young Readers Choice Awards are several activities supported by our library program.

Primary Function

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for educating the whole child by providing a quality learning experience to all children in his/her care. The library media specialist is charged with the daily operation of the library media program. He/she has the primary responsibility for the major library media center functions. In the execution of these functions, library media specialists must assume several distinct roles, including:

  • A consultative role: includes active consultation with teachers as they plan instruction to recommend the inclusion of appropriate library and media skills instruction and resources into classroom curricular units.
  • A instructional role: includes both formal instruction in library, media, and technology skills (in conjunction with the Director of Instructional Technology) that addresses multiples literacies (information, media, visual, and technology), as well as informal assistance to students and staff in locating and using library media materials and technology. The library media specialist creates an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning.
  • An administrative role: includes the daily management of library media center routines, evaluation of library media materials, purchasing, circulation control, provision of equitable access to all physical and virtual collections of resources that support the school curriculum and meet the diverse needs of all learners, and coordination of library volunteers.
  • An information specialist role: includes developing and maintaining a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum and the learners, modeling effective strategies for developing multiple literacies, and evaluating, promoting, and using existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning.

  • GMA Library Media Specialist- Job Description

    In each role, the library media specialist works to promote reading as a foundational skill for learning, personal growth and enjoyment. The program models an inquiry-based approach to learning and the information search process. It is guided by the regular assessment of student learning which is regularly analyzed to improve instruction. The library media specialist must remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research as applicable.

    Key Relationships

    The Library Media Specialist reports to the Principal and is evaluated, supervised, and mentored by the Principal, Vice Principal, and/or Director of Curriculum and Student Life. Other key relationships include other faculty members, staff, students and parents.

    Qualification and Requirements

    A candidate should hold:

    • A Bachelors or Masters Degree in Education

    • PA Library Certification

    • A Master of Library Science Degree (MLS) is preferred

    • Membership to American Association of School Librarians (AASL)

    A candidate will need upon hiring:

    • Compliance with State and Archdiocesan Safe Environment and Act 126 guidelines

    A candidate must demonstrate:

    • The ability to establish collaborative relationships with teaching staff

    • Familiarity with MSA-CESS criteria and standards of excellence

    Long-Term Learning Support Substitute Teacher - Full 2018-2019 School Year

    Long-Term Learning Support Substitute Teacher, Gwynedd-Mercy Academy Elementary

    Gwynedd-Mercy Academy is seeking a creative and talented long-term substitute Learning Support Teacher for the 2018-2019 school year to serve in the McAuley Learning Center, a growing learning support program that was designed in 2015 to foster the Mercy mission and enhance the school-based programming of students identified with learning differences. This substitute position is full-time and will span the entire school year. The learning support teacher supports the academic needs in and out of the classroom for students in Kindergarten through grade 8. The Learning Specialist will also work with faculty and parents serving as a resource member of the Student Support Team. Qualifications include Master’s Degree in Special Education, PA State Teaching Certification, and Reading Specialist certification or training in Wilson or Orton-Gillingham.

    Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    Candidates must also complete required Act 126 and child abuse prevention trainings and be able to pass the background check required of all school employees.

    Kindergarten Aide

    Kindergarten Aide, Gwynedd-Mercy Academy Elementary

    Gwynedd-Mercy Academy is seeking a creative and talented long-term substitute Kindergarten Aide for the 2018-2019 school year

    Responsibilities: Assist the kindergarten teacher with instructional activities and perform specific duties as assigned. Assist in providing individual and small-group instruction and work with the classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning.

    Requirements: Bachelor's Degree Preferred. Experience in working with children. General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; proficient in Microsoft Office, educational software and Google applications; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents and students.

    Candidates must also complete required Act 126 and child abuse prevention trainings and be able to pass the background check required of all school employees.
