Vaping: A Risk for Your Child
A new trend which is causing significant concern among teenagers is that of vaping. While smoking cigarettes has declined dramatically among young people, rates of vaping are on the rise. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, since 2011 there has been a 900% increase in the use of e-cigarettes by teens, and it is reported that over half a million middle school students have engaged in vaping in the last 30 days. Vaping is specifically designed to appeal to younger people, using fruity flavors and easily-concealed products that may look like computer flash drives. However, consequences can still include nicotine addiction, "popcorn lung," and exposure to other carcinogenic chemicals.
It's important to us that parents have the information they need to combat this concern. We will host David Fialko, a certified prevention specialist from the Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania, to present a program regarding vaping to our parents on Tuesday, October 23rd at 8:30 AM. Coffee and light breakfast will be provided. Please RSVP below by Friday, October 19, so that we can ensure appropriate seating for this event. Parents of students in all grades are welcome to attend; however the presentation will be especially important for middle school parents. Any questions should be addressed to School Counselor, Mrs. Kristin Fromal.
