Gwynedd-Mercy Academy participates in the Montgomery County Reading Olympics program, sponsored by the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit. The Reading Olympics program is designed to encourage students to read more by helping them discover the joy and excitement of reading and talking about books
All interested students in grades 4 -8 are invited to participate and the students are divided into teams of 10-15 students. Teams will read books from a prepared list that includes 25 titles chosen to be appropriate for both the team's age and reading levels. Students will meet biweekly in the library (during the school day) to share and discuss their interpretations and comprehension of what they have read.
The Reading Olympics program culminates in a special evening celebration and competition, where teams will be asked questions about the books they've read. There are two levels of competition, elementary for grades 4 and 5, and middle school for grades 6-8. A competition for each level will be held in the spring via Zoom and take place on campus, supervised by faculty facilitators. Each student will be assigned approximately 2-3 books to read over the course of four months.
